Defining & Propelling Change We Can Believe In
MLK Day '09 in Washington DC
We the People ... Pledge to Work for Change
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday January 19th, 2009 the Backbone Campaign set up its giant Constitution Preamble. 20 feet wide by 70 feet long (and growing), this iconic symbol of our national mission to create a more perfect union was installed at DuPont Circle in downtown Washington, DC.
The day before the historic inauguration of Barack Obama we met the joyful throngs of people and invited them to sign this symbol of common purpose as a way of pledging to stay engaged in the project of defining and propelling change we can believe in.
Elated by the peaceful conquering of oppressive barriers that chained our hearts, ecstatic with the love of discovering each other eye-to-eye with renewed hope for healing, and electric with the promise of changes to come - over one thousand people signed the giant Preamble in a matter of 6 hours.
Gratitude is due to Steffon Moody, Evan Simmons, Tom Gross Shader, Jack Barbash, Wally Fletcher, Susan Harmon, Doreen Moyer, David Godsey and all the others who shared in the creation or have carried this great icon around the country.
During the current Procession for the Future tour, the giant Preamble will lead the parade and at each stop an additional 20 feet will be added, so that by April 4 in New York City it will stretch 200 feet as it is carried through the streets celebrating the true authors and instigators of change, We the People.
