Hibakusha to Speak at First United Methodist Church of Seattle on May 5th
On Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 7:30 PM, the First United Methodist Church of Seattle, 180 Denny Way, will host a visiting delegation from Japan that will present an urgent plea to abolish nuclear weapons.
The delegation, representing the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (Gensuikyo), is visiting Seattle following its participation in international events in New York leading up to and beginning the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference at the United Nations, which begins May 3, 2010.
This special event in Seattle is an opportunity to build awareness and knowledge of nuclear weapons issues, and offer opportunities for people to get involved in the movement to create a nuclear weapons-free world.
The delegation, which includes a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima (known as Hibakusha), will present testimony and an urgent plea to work towards a nuclear weapons-free world. The Hiroshima Nagasaki A-Bomb Photo Poster Exhibition, provided by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, will also be on display. Folksinger and storyteller Tom Rawson will begin the evening in song.
An informal reception following the presentation is an opportunity to meet with members of the delegation. Representatives from other national organizations working for a nuclear weapons-free world will offer educational materials, and be available to discuss ways you can get involved to build a nuclear weapons-free world.
The event starts at 7:30 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend. A free will offering will be taken.
Special thanks to First United Methodist Church of Seattle for hosting this event. Hosts for the delegation’s Seattle visit are Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, Tacoma Catholic Worker, Journey of Repentance and the Bainbridge Island Nipponzan Miyohoji Buddhist Temple.
