As Part of Seattle Israeli Apartheid Week ~
Tuesday & Wednesday, March 2-3, 2010
Sponsored by Palestine Solidarity Committee - Seattle
Help protest at Israeli musician Idan Raichel's concert next week at Jazz Alley.
Dear friends and colleagues,
Last year, Idan Raichel came to Seattle as part of Israel's "rebranding" campaign. We protested, talked with him and caught him in many falsehoods and ignorant statements which revealed a lack of understanding of the Palestinian cause and the reality of their lives.
Raichel, a popular "world music" performer, has shown himself to be an avid supporter of the Israeli Army, and has publicly expressed approval of its recent invasions of Gaza. He has received direct assistance from the Israeli government for taking part in the whitewashing of Israel's image. The "Idan Raichel Project" poses as a young, sexy, and above all multi-cultural music experience (incorporating many cultural influences except those of the Palestinians). However, there is nothing attractive about whitewashing Israel's crimes against humanity.
Last year we promised that we would protest if Raichel returned. He is coming back to Jazz Alley, 6th Ave./Lenora (click here for directions) very soon: March 2nd and 3rd. The music starts 7:30 pm, but the Jazz Alley is a dinner theater and on its web site, advises patrons to arrive 1 1/2 hours early. Our protest therefore begins at 6:00 pm, ends at 7:30 pm on both March 2nd and 3rd.
Please help take a stand against Israeli whitewashing of its crimes against the Palestinian people. This protest has been approved by PACBI, the Palestinian Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.

Relevant points from Jazz Alley website/ Idan Raichel's site, and responses:
- "This one-man Middle East peace accord makes music that is an ambitious celebration of multicultural diversity. The ethnic elements are cleverly rewired with modern grooves to create an ambient journey that thrillingly bridges the traditional and the modern." - The Times (London, UK)---
- Six years ago, when Israeli keyboardist and composer Idan Raichel was an unknown musician ...fusing Israeli pop music with Middle Eastern, African, Indian and other global sounds, he never anticipated the impact his unique approach would soon have. On the heels of his explosive rise in popularity, record breaking sales in Israel and sold out performances across the globe to rapturous crowds in some of the world's most prestigious venues, he returns to lead The Idan Raichel Project for their second international album, Within My Walls.
His poetic lyrics reflect these travels and contemplations; sung in Hebrew, Moroccan Arabic, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole and Swahili...

Idan Raichel is part of an increasingly successful "world music" scene from Israel, which leaves out Palestinian voices, while claiming to be inclusive, and is becoming increasingly popular among US fans and local radio. They are contributing to confusion about what is really going on in Israel-Palestine, and to varying degrees are engaging in cultural theft. Additionally, his album title is cruelly inappropriate. This is part of Israel's "rebranding" campaign. Don't let this group play in Seattle without protest!
